how i became a koreaboo (part 2)
But the good thing about Netflix is they add their recommendation once you finish watching an episode. So, still reeling from GMC, I immediately started on the recommended show which was Playful Kiss.
Apart from being a recommendation, it caught my attention since it was basically the same as GMC’s plot. I binge watched, no, inhaled, this show for just two days! My mind was focused on getting my fix from one episode to the next as fast as possible that I did not realize what was happening.
Later on, it dawned on me that my senses were barraged with stimulants from every direction, with strange new visuals, music and feelings.
Kdrama focused on perfecting on those three main criteria. It worked for me because innately, I am a visual person so if I like what I see, I tend to take a liking to everything else associated with it.
Needless to say, I was bewitched.
And so my quest for my next drama fix began. I did not know anything about j and k drama so I did a lot of googling and read a lot of reviews to find out what is out there.
For jdrama, I ended up watching movies more than drama. My earlier finds were L.DK, Koizora and Strobe Edge.
For kdrama, my research all pointed me towards Lee Min Ho. If you’re already a kdrama fan, you’ll know what comes next. Yes, it’s none other than Boys Over Flowers and The Heirs. So the kdrama onslaught began.
And I just can’t get enough of the feels and the pretty boys! It was my shiny new thing.
The more I was challenged to find the next show to watch, the more my compulsion was triggered. I had to feed the need that at some point, I was watching two shows at the same time!
So here I am, almost two years passed, I have over 100 titles watched under my belt. I now have favorites and go-to show genre that I prioritize watching. Of course I know more about Korea now. I am continuously learning about their culture and keeping up to date about their celebrities and even current events. And I can even name the celebrities by heart!
When I am in a slump, I tend to watch reruns of my favorites. Case in point, I watched Moonlight Drawn by the Clouds and Playful Kiss five times already. And because of kdrama, I learned to listen to kpop. First the OSTs, and now my latest addiction, EXO.
And so my koreaboo journey continues. As of writing, I already enrolled in two online Korean language courses. It was inevitable.
