A couple of months back, I discovered EXO. Yup, I jumped the kpop bandwagon! But EXO was not the first korean music I listened to. I got into the kdrama scene around about this time last year and I happened to like some of the OSTs. Fast forward to early 2017 after watching Goblin, I took a liking to the Chanyeol OST.
Fast fast forward. After being in a kdrama slump for a while, I started looking into k-web dramas. And that’s when I stumbled upon EXO Next Door. And then it clicked that the Goblin OST I liked is by an EXO member.
Let me pause and give you some context. One, I have a pretty obssesive personality. Two, I am a big snob. Three, I have a very particular taste in music, and that is rock, hard and heavy metal rock. Lastly, I like pretty things, because who doesn’t?!
Having said that, I started my EXO research purely out of curiosity. What has gotten millions of people worldwide, raving about this kpop boy group?
After watching most of their music videos, live performances, concert videos and variety show guestings, I was a gonner. Hook, line and sinker. Their simple monogram belie the nature of the group as there is nothing simple about EXO. EXO has become my bias wrecker when it comes to music.
For one, I truly came enjoy listening to their music. I barely listen to pop but recently I became a follower of pop music via Spotify. And since EXO’s music is heavy on western influence, it made it easy to relate to their songs even if I don’t understand the lyrics for the most part. Top of my head, my favorites are MAMA, Love Me Right, Unfair and Boomerang.
But perhaps, what got me hooked are the visuals. They are one group of pretty looking boys!
And on top of that, they can dance. As in urban dancing style. After the Jobowokeez, the urban dance style has become an explosive trend worldwide. And S.Korea will not be left behind in trends. As I have come to learn, EXO is best known for their dance style. And boy can they dance! It’s hard to pick a favorite but if pressed, I will say my favorites are Overdose, Call Me Baby, KoKoBop and Power.
I wish I can get a chance to watch their concerts. From what I have seen in their concert videos, an EXO concert will satisfy your thirst but will leave you longing for more at the same time.
And so I end my intro to EXO here. I posted some EXO mv links below. For some reason one has stumbled upon my post without knowing who EXO is, you can check them out. For those who are already EXO-L and found my post worth reading, well you don’t need a reason to watch our boys, right?
